A Writing Tip to Feel the Love

Do you remember being 6 years old? Can you connect back to those memories or can you go further and connect with the person you were then? The one who didn’t know the world quite yet, who played with her friends, who loved and hated things for no particular reason except that it made sense, who didn’t carry around the heaviness in her heart that grew from trauma later in life? Do you remember her? Because she’s still here, both within you and out there. Within you there’s a little girl demanding her story be written. Out there there’s a little girl, devouring your story and not following her first-grade rules to share because it means too much to her.

Quiet the critic and go write. Love your writing the way your 6-year-old self would. Terry Crews has this lovely phrase, “Be. Have. Do.” Believe you’re a writer. Pretend you’re already the successful author or poet that you want to be. Then ask yourself, “If I already was, what would I have needed to do to get there?” Once you have your list of actions, Do. Read this adorable 6-year-old’s note, then get out there and be that writer who loves her writing as much as your audience one day will.
