This book is a best-kept secret though it should be shouted from the rooftops. I will wager that once you read it, you’ll wish you had heard of it sooner. I don’t know where this book came from, but I suppose it’s perfect that it flew in through the door just like Mary Poppins. This story is told through journal entries, emails, and news clippings. You start the book with T.C., and you love the Boston accent, the little bit of vulnerability that’s already peeking out, and the way he makes you laugh. Then you meet Augie, T.C.’s brother from another mother who’s endearing and lovely, and not just because he calls out T.C. when he’s being ridiculous. Finally, you hear from Alejandra, the daughter of the Ambassador to Mexico, and the new girl to T.C.’s junior class who T.C. is determined to fall in love with. There’s baseball and dance and Judy Garland. There’s love and laughter and heartache and magic. Kluger does a wonderful job of making his setting be reminiscent of high school, but where you had true friends like T.C. and Augie and Alejandra. It’s a book that wraps you up in a warm, fuzzy blanket and deposits you at the end of the journey with a red tint to your cheeks. It’s the kind of story you want to begin again immediately upon completion. I don’t care how many books are on your night stand waiting to be read, or the lack of room on your bookshelf, get yourself a copy of My Most Excellent Year. You can thank me later.
